My time has come. Unfortunately, it took a global pandemic to make it happen. Social-distancing, sheltering-in-place, self-quarantine. We now have a name for what apparently has been my lifestyle. I like being at home. I really don’t enjoy traveling. Vacations? Like fresh fish, I’m good for three days.

I would wager that uncertainty is the main cause of stress most of us are feeling during this corona virus pandemic.  We are uncertain how long we will be forced to live largely inside our own homes, conducting business and friendships on Zoom or Facetime, and seeing only family members face-to-face.  We are unsure of whether the precautions we

Message for COVID-19 in Salisbury

100 years ago — 1920

SALISBURY — Charles Coons Jr. has been quite ill with a hard cold.

LIME ROCK — Miss May Goux is in the Sharon Hospital, owing to poisoning in one hand.

SALISBURY — Malcolm Spurr has had his residence wired for electricity.

There are so many struggling with the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, with few well-defined paths to good outcomes right now. The time is unique, but it gives us some feeling of control and comfort, it seems, to compare it to other times and look for historic ways of coping that have worked before and might work now.

KENT — When we left for spring break at the end of February, the coronavirus wasn’t on my radar. We had just finished up winter term of school [at Marvelwood, an independent boarding and day school in Kent] and I looked forward to sleeping late.

When we Americans make it through the COVID-19 pandemic as a viable group, how do we want to remember the time it overtook our nation and our planet, and the way we responded to it? Will we think about how we had to pull back from those around us and bond with our families?
