LIME ROCK — M. Merriman and wife of Torrington were in town Sunday.

 

Leonard J. Nickerson of West Cornwall has been reappointed by Governor Marcus H. Holcomb to be prosecuting agent of the Connecticut Humane Society.

 

ORE HILL — Mrs. Jacob Wevitoski has had electric lights installed in her house.

 

LAKEVILLE — George Silvernale has a new Chevrolet roadster.

 

There was quite a heavy white frost Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

 

These are the days when a mess of dandelion greens is quite the proper item on the bill of fare.

 

50 years ago — May 1970

Mrs. John D. Briscoe of Lakeville has been named Chairman of the Committee to Elect Ella Grasso. Secretary of the State Grasso is a candidate for the Democratic Congressional nomination in the Sixth District.

 

David and Marjorie Batstone of Birch Hill have obtained a license to start a taxi business in Kent. On file at the Town Hall is their trade name, Kent Cab.

SHARON — An estimated 450 people ignored gray skies and chilly breezes Saturday to attend the ceremonial opening of Sharon Hospital’s new wing. The $19.8 million wing is opening gradually over the next week, starting with patient registration off the new lobby and the physical and occupational therapy departments located on the first floor.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
