JONATHAN LANDMAN

I’m an editor at Bloomberg Opinion, where I work mainly with writers specializing in politics, economics, law, public policy and finance. I work half-time, sharing a job with a colleague and alternating month-to-month (I handle the odd-numbered months). Before entering this transition to retirement two years ago, I was an editor and news executive at Bloomberg and the New York Times for six and 26 years respectively, having led various departments at both organizations. At the Times I served (among many jobs) as culture editor, metro editor and, for five years, manager of the newsroom’s transformation from print to web.

I’m a graduate of Amherst College and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and was an Amherst trustee from 2003 to 2009. I’m now a member of the board of the Cornwall Chronicle, a monthly journal of life in our little northwest corner town.

Cornwall has been my full-time home since the start of the pandemic and a part-time refuge from New York City apartments since 1960, when my parents discovered the eccentric Cornwall community of Yelping Hill and began spending summers there, eventually building a house on Dibble Hill Road about a mile-and-a-half above the covered bridge. I enjoy hiking, bike riding and skiing; also opera, jazz, art museums and nonfiction writing. I once played the cello quite seriously and hope to pick it up again soon. I live with my wife of 40 years, Bonnie Vangilder, a retired TV news producer. Our daughter, Rachel, a geographer for the Census Bureau, lives in Spokane, WA. Our son, Aaron is a software executive with his own place on Dibble Hill Road and a home in New York. Grandchildren? We’re waiting eagerly.
