The challenge of keeping any business or service going for 125 years cannot be overstated: As times change, needs change, and there are no easy answers to remaining relevant. So for a small community weekly newspaper like The Lakeville Journal to have continued over all these years was not a given.
The Housatonic Youth Service Bureau (HYSB) was founded 30 years ago, in 1992, to support Region One youth between the ages of 4 and 18 in the goal of attaining strong emotional health. That anniversary is a meaningful milestone for this crucially important agency, and for all the towns it serves.
Right around this time in 2018, Salisbury took the positive step of approving at town meeting the Holley Block option for the Salisbury Housing Committee to lease property on Millerton Road in Lakeville owned by the town, and then began the process of analyzing it as a site for 12 to 18 affordable housing units.
Of all the things to take for granted, something like Canaan Railroad Days is one that should never be. How many other towns have events like this that have survived for 58 years? Especially in that it spans five full days, still, though it was for years even longer.

When the Supreme Court overturned the almost 50-year-old landmark decision Roe v. Wade on Friday, June 24, which had up until then protected a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion, it reversed vital precedent.
Juneteenth has just passed, the second since it became a national holiday in 2021. Connecticut has made it a state holiday as well, which will take effect next year. More than 150 years after emancipation of all the slaves in the United States happened, it’s about time there has finally been some national recognition of it.
