This just in, on last week's stories!

CORNWALL — Updates were called in on two stories that appeared in last week’s issue of The Journal.

Just after the press deadline, new numbers came in to the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund on Cornwall’s participation in the 20 Percent by 2010 campaign.

Bob Wall reported that residents, businesses and town-owned buildings buying power from renewable energy sources topped 200, which equals 30 percent participation.

As a result, the town will receive a third 1 kilowatt solar voltaic system, plus a 5 kilowatt system as a bonus for being the first in the state to reach 30 percent. Wall is attempting to assemble data to determine Cornwall’s national rank, which just might be number one.

And another story that ran last week, with a vintage postcard of Riverside Lodge, up for auction on eBay?

Jennifer Clarke, of Clarke Outdoors on Route 7, just south of the Covered Bridge, called to say the lodge was at the site of the company’s current building. She tried to buy the card, but missed the auction. She was advised to contact the seller, who consistently offers postcards of Cornwall at the Internet site.

Apparently, a town as picturesque as Cornwall has produced a wealth of new and used postcards that do a fascinating job of chronicling its history.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
