Ivan Scott Christiansen

NORTH CANAAN — Ivan Scott Christiansen, 72, formerly of North Canaan, and Christiansen’s Bakery, passed away at his home in DePeyster, N.Y., on April 2, 2010, following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Mr. Christiansen was born March 15, 1938, in Oslo, Norway, the son of Elvira and Arvid Christiansen. The family immigrated to the United States in 1948.  

He married Juneth LaGier of Norfolk, Conn., on April 29, 1961. They moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he and his father owned and operated Christiansen’s Bakery for 25 years.

Ivan and his family then moved to North Canaan, where he and his son, Scott, opened and ran Christiansen’s Bakery & Cafe until his retirement in 2003.

In addition to his wife, Juneth, Mr. Christiansen is survived by six daughters and two sons, Linda Fore of Woodinville, Wash., Eva Harkness of Meadville, Pa., Scott Christiansen and Lisa Mangan, both of North Canaan, Lisbet Nauroth of Nicholson, Pa., Renee Roy and Leah Collins, both of Torrington, and Norman Christiansen of Centralia, Wash.; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Arild Christiansen of Oslo; and two sisters, Aud Mittet of Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, and Brit Grosvold of Warrenville, S.C.

He was predeceased by one son, Henry, in 1978; and one great-grandson, Jackson Gilbert.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at Faith Bible Church in Winsted, the Rev. Joseph McNally and the Rev. Brent Fore officiating.

Donations may be made in his memory to Faith Bible Church of Winsted or to the New Cancer Care Center Oncology Dept. at CCMC. (860-610-5720, connecticutchildrens.org\abrighterhope) in honor of his grandson, Blake Roy, a cancer survivor.

Water main cleaning in North Canaan

Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
