Ideas and help wanted

WASHINGTON — The  town of Washington wants residents’ ideas for the Comprehensive Plan and volunteers for town boards. Town Clerk May Alex posted an appeal on the town’s website last week encouraging the early submission of ideas to contribute to the discussion of the vision for the town’s new Comprehensive Plan. The public discussion is planned for Saturday, Feb. 5, at the firehouse, but fresh ideas may be submitted beforehand by e-mail at masterplan@washingtonny.org.

The town is also recruiting volunteers to serve on important town boards.

The Planning Board, which meets twice a month on the first and last Tuesday, reviews applications for subdivision and site plans and requires a major time commitment.

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) meets once a month on the third Tuesday and reviews applications requesting variances to the town’s zoning code.

The Conservation Advisory Commission (CAC) makes recommendations to the Planning Board and the ZBA on a variety of environmental matters and meets once a month on the first Wednesday.

The Board of Assessment Review (BAR) meets only once in the year on a single afternoon in May to make decisions regarding grievances filed by taxpayers.

Special training for the Planning Board and the BAR is required by the state.

The vacancies are open to all full-time residents of the town of Washington who are older than 18 years of age and want to make a contribution to the community. All potential volunteers should send a letter of interest and a resume to town Supervisor Florence Prisco by e-mail to supervisor@washingtonny.org or by mail to PO
Box 667, Millbrook, N.Y. 12545.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
