Hotchkiss remains consistent in swimming tourney

LAKEVILLE — The Hotchkiss School’s Hixon Pool once again played host to the Founders League swimming and diving championships on Feb. 22 and 25, and the Hotchkiss girls and boys teams finished in exactly the same positions as last year.The boys finished in second place with 332 points, narrowly edging out Loomis and well behind champion Choate, which captured the title last year. The girls finished fifth with 234 points, an improvement of nearly 30 points over last year’s total. Loomis also repeated as champion for the girls.Highlights for the boys included another diving title for Jack McCarthy, who has won the crown all three of his years at Hotchkiss. This year, McCarthy set a new Founders League record for an 11-dive set with a total of 425.70 points, more than 100 points ahead of the second-place finisher.The boys team recorded two wins in the Feb. 25 swimming competition, with Jack Shanley winning the 200-yard freestyle and Zach Katz taking first place in the 100-yard breaststroke.Ian Bateman recorded two more top-four finishes for the boys, finishing fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and third in the 500-yard freestyle event.The best relay performance for the boys was a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle by the team of Shanley, Bateman, Edward Tan and Hughbo Shim.The girls team improved their performance in both individual and team events. The best individual performance was a fifth-place finish by Adria Mankute in the 200-yard freestyle.The team recorded two top-five finishes in the freestyle relays, with the quartet of Binx Saunders, Mankute, Claire O’Brien and Alexandra Dolido finishing third in the 200-yard event and fifth in the 400-yard event.The girls team also saw contributions in its diving program, with Ryann Stacy finishing sixth at 275 points, only 40 points behind the winner from Westminster.Both teams will now head to Exeter for the New England championships.

He also gave quick assessments of books to about a dozen people after his remarks.

Housing group seeks approval of land transfer

KENT — The plan to develop about 10 units of affordable housing on town land inched forward this week following a lightly attended April 12 public hearing concerning the transfer of 1.16 acres of land from the town to Kent Affordable Housing (KAH).

The hearing gave residents a chance to comment on a conditional approval for the transfer, which would be done at no cost to KAH. The proposal still faces a town meeting vote.
