Tens of thousands of Dutchess County seniors have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but a key task remains — getting the vaccine to seniors who, because of disability or frailty, cannot get to a traditional vaccine site, pop-up clinic or doctor’s office.
More seniors than ever before are reaching the milestone of 100 years of age. By the Office for the Aging’s (OFA) estimates, Dutchess County is close to having 100 centenarian residents.

In the days before the COVID-19 pandemic, when we met with seniors for presentations at Office for the Aging (OFA) Senior Friendship Centers, we discussed five risk factors for older adults to think about when walking: intersections, visibility, vehicles backing up, the physical environment and weather, and personal health.
This is the last in a series of pedestrian safety columns that was first printed at the end of 2020, prepared in conjunction with Dutchess County Transportation Council Senior Planner Emily Dozier and Senior Public Health Education Coordinator of the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health Aisha Phillips.
At the Office for the Aging (OFA), we do the best we can to anticipate the needs and concerns of seniors and caregivers throughout Dutchess County; and when it comes to anticipation, a line from a Golden Living column from 2018 really hit the mark: “Bad news has a way of showing up before the conversation ever happens.”

The “Golden Gathering” will be returning to Dutchess County on Saturday, Oct. 3. State Senator Sue Serino (R-41) and the Office for the Aging (OFA) are hosting the free event for the benefit of seniors and caregivers throughout the 41st Senate District and Dutchess County — and, like so many 2020 events, it’s been adapted to the COVID era.

By the end of the month, it’ll be fall — the season begins on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and the first day of fall coincides every year with Fall Prevention Week, Sept. 21 through the 25th.
