The Fall 2023 issue of OFA’s quarterly THRIVE60+ newsletter is now available at www.dutchessny.gov/aging, and will soon be distributed throughout the county. You’ll find it at public libraries, and postal mail subscribers should see their copies arrive this month.
The advice the Office for the Aging provides for older adults and their caregivers isn’t necessarily carved in stone. When new evidence emerges to challenge the original advice, we adjust our advice accordingly — as is the case with the past few years’ findings on injuries and deaths caused by falls among older adults.
Many older adults have ideas about doing more volunteering once they retire, but not necessarily anything specific. We at the Office for the Aging can help you explore your options.
The Dutchess County Office for the Aging is hosting an in-person AARP Smart Driver Course on Friday, June 23, 9 a.m to 4 p.m. at the OFA Poughkeepsie Friendship Center, 114 Delafield St. in Poughkeepsie. It’s open to all licensed drivers from Dutchess County over age 60. Lunch from OFA can be provided, or you can bring your own.
The emergency phase of the nation’s response to COVID-19 is set to end on Thursday, May 11. The Dutchess County Office for the Aging celebrates 50 years of operation in 2023. We have lots to celebrate, and just as much work to do. Most notably, we expect continued significant growth in demand for services as the baby boom generation continues to age. Even the youngest “boomers” will turn 60 in 2024.
Adults who stay well-hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions such as heart and lung disease, and live longer than those who may not get sufficient fluids, according to a National Institutes of Health study released this month.
