Gilbert alumni play with pride at basketball game

WINSTED — It was a leap, shoot and dunk back in time for past Gilbert School students during the second annual alumni basketball game. The game, which was held on Saturday, Nov. 26, at the school’s gymnasium, brought back many students from the school’s basketball program.Head coach Mark Douglass said that, while time and age may have slowed down the players, all of them still played with pride.“We hold this game because we know that all of the players feel pride in the school,” Douglass said. “When we held the first one last year, it turned out that the game and attendance were very good. That’s why we held it again this year.”George Pimentel graduated from Gilbert in 2008 and has fond memories of his years as a high school basketball player.“I learned how to win by playing basketball,” Pimentel said. “I have so many good memories. I remember the first game I played and the thrill I got when the announcer called my name. I also remember the bus rides to away games and all the friendships that I made. They were all life-changing experiences.”Don Crossman, who graduated in 2008, also has fond memories of his time at Gilbert.“So much stuff I learned from playing basketball at Gilbert,” Crossman said. “I learned about commitment and what it takes to succeed. The coaches never let us settle for anything less than what we can do. We were a family.”

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
