Giants are a lock to defeat Miami

Last week, 8-5, for the season, 69-34; Pick of the Week, 6-1 for the season.

I survived. That’s about all I can say about last week. The Raiders stunk and Miami fell apart at the end, the Lions lost at home, and can someone explain to me how the Titans got beat so badly? I didn’t see that coming at all. My Pick of the Week came in, but it doesn’t take a genius to pick the Packers at this point of the season.

Can you believe that it is already the halfway point in the regular season? Let’s move onto this week’s games. Good luck with your picks.

Sunday, Oct. 30

New Orleans at St. Louis — I can’t come up with any reason not to pick the Saints in this one. The Rams may well play tough in the early going, but in the end the Saints win, 34-20.

Miami at N.Y. Giants — Here we go again. The Giants look like a lock, especially coming off the bye week. I think they are and I’ll make them my Pick of the Week, Giants win 27-17.

Arizona at Baltimore — I’m not a big fan of the Ravens, but I wouldn’t want to be playing them this week coming off their loss to the Jags. The Cards can be tough, but I see the Ravens winning this one, 24-17.

Minnesota at Carolina — The Vikings finally showed up against the Packers, but Cam Newton should shine at home. I’ll take the Panthers, 28-20.

Indianapolis at Tennessee — The Colts will continue their pursuit of the first pick in the draft with another loss this week. I look for the Titans to rebound from last week and win, 23-19.

Jacksonville at Houston — The Jags are coming off a nice home win over Ravens, but the Texans’ road win at Tennessee was impressive as well. I’ll stick with Houston, 24-13.

Detroit at Denver — Tim Tebow managed to squeeze out a win against the winless Dolphins, but the Lion defense should be the difference maker in this game. I’ll stick with Detroit, 27-20.

Washington at Buffalo — The Redskins’ offense is non-existent while the Bills should be raring to go after their bye week. I’ll stick with Buffalo in this one, 23-17.

Cincinnati at Seattle — The Bengals are coming off their bye week, but I’m not sold on them by any means. I think Seattle will rebound at home and win this one, 24-23.

Cleveland at San Francisco — I like the Browns, but they just don’t score enough to take seriously. The 49ers are rolling and I think that will continue. The 49ers should win 20-13.

New England at Pittsburgh — This is without question the game of the week. The Patriots have been scoring at will but the defense is still suspect at times. The Steelers continue to improve each week, and Big Ben is hot. I’ll take my Steelers in this shootout, 34-31.

Dallas at Philadelphia — If Dallas is to be taken seriously then they must win this game. Vick and the Eagles will be tough, but I think the game will be won in the trenches and Dallas has the edge in that department. I’ll take the Cowboys, 27-24.

Monday, Oct. 31

San Diego at Kansas City — The Chargers are almost as unpredictable as the Giants. The Chiefs are showing signs of improvement, but I can’t see San Diego losing two in a row. I’ll stick with the Chargers, 28-19.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
