Funding restored for ride service for retirees

NORTH CANAAN — The Social Transportation Program at Geer is back. It’s the same program that came to an abrupt halt at the end of August. Existing funds had run out. Any plans for continuing funding were eliminated in the early rounds of state budget cuts this summer.

But like many threatened programs, funding was restored by the time the final budget was approved. Geer Adult Day Center, which operates the program, heard late last week they would be able to get it back up and running.

The service is free to residents in North Canaan, Sharon, Cornwall, Salisbury and Falls Village who are age 60 and over or who are disabled. It is in addition to the Dial-a-Ride program that brings them to medical appointments. It gives people a chance to get together with friends for social activities they plan themselves.

“It is such a great feeling to be able to offer this vital service, said Lori Neal, Geer Adult Day Center director.

Beginning today,  Oct. 8, the program resumes its regular schedule: Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
