Friends of Main Street date changes

WINSTED — The nonprofit, business-friendly Friends of Main Street organization has postponed its annual meeting for a second time after realizing the event conflicted with Winsted’s annual town budget meeting.

Originally scheduled for June 16 and postponed to June 23, the meeting has been finally set for Wednesday, July 9.

The venue for the meeting has also changed. Originally set to take place at the Gilson Cafe and Cinema, the party will happen at Northwest Community Bank, 68 Main St.

Friends of Main Street Executive Director Helen Ruwet Bunnell said Wednesday that the organization did not want to disrupt attendance at the budget meeting Monday, June 23, at 7 p.m. at The Gilbert School, since many residents look forward to participating in the budget process.

The July 9 Friends of Main Street meeting will be more of a celebratory affair, with food, wine and beer, awards for local volunteers and recognition of achievements in the business community. The date also marks the beginning of Winsted’s Summer Concert Series in East End Park, which is sponsored in part by Friends of Main Street.

"We would like people to join us at 5:30 for refreshments and awards and then we’d like everyone to join us at the concert," Bunnell said. The concert will feature the Treetop Orchestra, a Torrington-area classic rock band featuring former Blue Oyster Cult guitarist Joe Bouchard.

Anyone interested in joining Friends of Main Street is encouraged to attend the July 9 festivities. For more information, call 860-738-3351.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
