Tri-State Chamber car parade to honor workers

FALLS VILLAGE —  It was National Superhero Day on Tuesday, April 28, and to express appreciation for the efforts of medical workers and emergency services personnel, the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce organized a car parade.

By the time the show got on the road just before 1 p.m., there were about 50 vehicles at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village.

The mood was festive, if dampened somewhat by the now-ubiquitous masks. Willie Hallihan showed up, to be greeted by Jean Saliter, who asked from a minimum 6-foot distance how he was keeping.

“Underhugged,” said Hallihan.

Tri-State Chamber board Director Marlane White said the organization was looking for a way to thank the “front-line workers” in the area.

A car parade seemed like “a good way to get to numerous spots.”

The parade, with vehicles adorned with paper hearts and messages of encouragement, left the high school, went north on Route 7, passing the Falls Village Emergency Services Center, and headed to Geer Village in North Canaan.

They also went by Noble Horizons and the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association in Salisbury, Sharon Health Care and Sharon Hospital in Sharon, and numerous fire and rescue departments, including the one in Millerton.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
