As life returns to normal, spring animals arrive

FALLS VILLAGE — The return of most students to Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) coincided with the birth of two lambs (Ben and Jerry) early Tuesday morning, April 20.

By 11 a.m. Ben and Jerry were definitely up and about, taking hesitant steps, bleating a bit, and pestering their mother, Lois, for some milk.

HVRHS teacher Danielle Melino said staff and students were alerted to the impending births via a webcam in the barn, and were able to get there in case Lois needed assistance.

About 20 students were milling around the barn and enclosure, admiring the animals — and observing social distance protocols (with some reminders from Melino).

HVRHS principal Ian Strever came by to see the two lambs and seven Nigerian dwarf kids born in the last couple of weeks.

It was a peaceful — and normal — scene.
