Dorothy (Jamieson) Chamberlin


LAKEVILLE — Dorothy (Jamieson) Chamberlin, 102, of Delray Beach, Fla., and formerly of Lakeville, died April 11, 2007, at the Abbey Delray North Health Center. She was the widow of Mac A. Chamberlin, who passed on Dec. 23, 1973.

Mrs. Chamberlin was born on Oct. 23, 1904, in Saranac Lake, N.Y., daughter of the late Helen (Davies) and John Jamieson. She graduated from Skidmore College in 1927 and received her master’s degree in social work. In 1931, she did her internship at the Community Service Society. In 1934, she was the head of the Community Relief Program in Newark, N.J.

Mrs. Chamberlin and her husband owned and operated the Wake Robin Inn in Lakeville between 1945 and 1973, which they purchased from John Belcher Hunter and his wife.

The Wake Robin Inn was originally operated as the Taconic School for Girls between 1898 and 1915. Mrs. Chamberlin and her husband sold the Wake Robin in 1978.

In 1964, the Chamberlins expanded their resort hotel business with the purchase of the Surfside Apartments in Delray Beach, which they operated and expanded between 1964 and 1974.

Mrs. Chamberlin is survived by her sons, Winthrop Davies Chamberlin of New York, N.Y., and John Austin Chamberlin of Leadville, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Lee Chamberlin of New York City; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Felicity and Ned Chamberlin of New York City.

Graveside services were held on April 28 at the Salisbury Cemetery, the Rev. Richard Taber officiating. Memorial donations may be sent to the Community Service Society, 105 E. 22nd St., New York, NY 10010. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
