Collin & Co. offers Wedgewood and more

SALISBURY — Collin & Co., the newly formed estate/tag sale business of Anne and Nick Collin, will hold its first estate sale this weekend, from July 1 to 3. The Collins have been running estate/tag sales for three-and-a-half years, most recently under the banner of Collin Forbes O’Brien. That partnership disbanded last year. After taking a little time off, Anne and Nick decided to regroup and get back in the business. They expect to fill the same niche with their new company as they did in their former foursome. The inaugural sale will be at Deer Run on Salmon Kill Road, the home of Ira Levy and Stan Gurrell. The neo-Palladian home was built by Levy and Gurrell more than 20 years ago. Over the years, they have added to an arboretum of uncommon conifers. It is considered to be one of the top five pinetums (a collection of pines) in the United States. Like the house and property, the contents of the sale are unusual and unique. Buyers can expect an eclectic mix of modern and antique, with marquee names such as Eames, Gray, Hoffman, Hepplewhite and Wedgewood. Levy and Gurrell have built a home in Maine and are now redistributing and changing the focus of their collection; hence, the sale. The estate sale begins Friday, July 1, with a wine and cheese preview benefiting the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person. Regular sale days are Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Deer Run is located at 94 Salmon Kill Road. For more information call 860-989-3918 or go to www.collin-and-co.com.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
