Rugged, sporty gift ideas at Stadium System

NORTH CANAAN — Stadium System has been providing team merchandise for sports teams for nearly 60 years. About 10 years ago, they opened a retail store on Ashley Falls Road,at the north end of town. 

The company’s main business is in providing custom uniforms and gear and in repairing and cleaning up football helmets.

The store was originally an outlet for sports-related products but it’s changed over the years, and now offers a wide variety of working gear. The basketballs are next to the Carhartt hats and steel-toed boots.

Area officials get refresher on state Sunshine law

NORTH CANAAN — A review of dos and don’ts of Freedom of Information (FOI) rules drew a capacity audience of area town officials to the North Canaan Town Hall on Tuesday, April 23.
Randall DiBella, who is the town attorney for North Canaan and several other area towns, drew upon his 37 years of experience to present an outline of issues that frequently arise in the application of FOI rules in connection with board and commission meetings.

Stop & Shop strike over

NORTH CANAAN — The picketing strikers were no longer out on Route 44 in front of Stop & Shop on Monday, April 22. 
The union and grocery store chain had announced Sunday night, April 21, that they had reached an agreement.
And so, on the day after Easter and three days into Passover, shoppers began to return to the North Canaan grocery store. Shelves of non-perishables seemed to be well-stocked. The normal abundance of the produce department was diminished, with many of the fruit and vegetable displays empty.

History coming back to life at former Depot

NORTH CANAAN — The Canaan Union Station railroad history museum is chugging quietly forward, thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers who meet every Saturday morning at the recently renovated space.
The station, known around town as the Depot, was burned in an arson fire in 2001, just weeks after the terror attacks of Sept. 11.
It took 18 years of red tape and delays by the federal government to rebuild the edifice, which is an emotional and geographical center of the town.

Lowell and Karcheski engaged

NORTH CANAAN — Russell and Denyce Lowell of North Canaan are happy to announce the engagement of their youngest daughter, Machayla Rachelle, 27, to Scott William Karcheski, 33, son of Lynn Reineke-Kelsey of North Canaan and also of Brian Karcheski of Falls Village. Both are graduates of Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Machayla class of 2009 and Scott class of 2004. The wedding is set to take place at Bliss Farms in Granville, Mass., on Aug. 16.

Renovations to the center of North Canaan are on track

NORTH CANAAN — Selectman Christian Allyn reported on a recent meeting with the state Department of Transportation (DOT) about the major renovation of the railroad crossing in the center of North Canaan near the recently restored Union Station depot. 
He made his report to the Board of Selectmen at their monthly meeting on Monday, April 1.

New transfer station regs

NORTH CANAAN — New transfer station stickers are available at the North Canaan transfer station, according to First Selectman Charles Perotti.
Fees have increased this year, due to an increase in costs to the town for disposing of each ton of trash, Perotti said. The new disposal fee charged to the town this year is $83 per ton; last year’s rate was $72. The town also needs to pay a hauling fee for hauling the trash away.

A tight budget year coming up in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — The North Canaan selectmen submitted their proposed 2019-20 municipal budget to the Board of Finance at a meeting on Tuesday, March 19.
Estimates project total town expenditures at $2,690,049, an increase of $174,922 over the current year budget total of $2,515,127. 
Nancy O’Connor, Board of Finance chairman, said, “Obviously, this is only the beginning of the process.”
