I used to say while I was playing baseball at Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) how proud I felt to wear that jersey and represent our high school. My friends, teammates and peers thought I was just saying it as a fake-spirited rah-rah type of thing, or just thought I was crazy. I meant it with every ounce of my being and I was not the first one to think this way.

Swimming lessons at the Grove

LAKEVILLE — The town Grove offers a variety of swimming lessons to children of different ages.
Some classes include a mommy and me class, a parent and tot class, a 4-year-old class and a 5-year-old class.
Classes run from Monday to Friday with start times between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Mahoney tennis tournament Aug. 27

FALLS VILLAGE — A tennis tournament to honor the memory of the late Jack Mahoney, who died May 14, 2011, will be held Aug. 27 (rain date is Aug. 28) in Falls Village.
The tournament will be played on the courts at Housatonic Valley Regional High School that were built with his encouragement and that are named for him and longtime colleague and tennis buddy Roland Chinatti.
Mahoney was for many years a teacher and then principal at Housatonic; Chinatti was the athletic director.

Track sales will benefit Make-A-Wish

LIME ROCK — Lime Rock Park is partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation this weekend at the American le Mans Notheast Grand Prix, Friday and Saaturday, July 8 and 9.
The track will donate percentages of its revenue while Make-A-Wish volunteers will sell branded merchandise, souvenir programs and “hot lap” ticket. Lime Rock will also assist Make-A-Wish in organizing fundraising efforts directed at teams, drivers, vendors and driving clubs.

Sharon bridge scores

SHARON — There were three tables for duplicate bridge at Good Neighbors (1 Low Road) on June 29. It was a beautiful day. We played the Howell Movement. All six pairs played 25 boards. The average score was 25.
In first with 30.5 points (61 percent) were Vivian Sullivan and Terri Pastre; in second with 26.5 points (53 percent) were Norma Bartholomew and Tom Burke, and in third with 25 points (50 percent) were Jim Palmer and Harry Hall.

Mashomack Polo Club hosts International Polo Challenge

PINE PLAINS — The Mashomack Polo Club hosted its 14th annual International Polo Challenge on Saturday, June 25.
The event and one of the U.S. teams were sponsored by Town&Country magazine with three other teams sponsored by Moncler (U.S. team), Castello di Vicarello (Italian team) and Berluti (French team).
The proceeds from the event benefited three local causes: the Foundation for the Pine Plains Community Center and Library, the Pine Plains Fire Hose & Rescue Company and the Mashomack Barns Preservation.

New Haven man wins Sharon Sprint

SHARON — A gray overcast day did not dampen the spirits of athletes and onlookers waiting at Mudge Pond for the 2011 Sharon Sprint Triathlon to begin on Saturday, June 25. Eighty athletes came from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Idaho and the District of Columbia. Temperatures were in the mid 60s, with calm winds. The triathlon consists of three parts: a half-mile swim in Mudge Pond, a 12-mile bicycle ride and a running route of slightly less than 4 miles. The winner was Francesc Lopez, 33, from New Haven, Conn., with an overall time of 1:19:00.

Undefeated

Northwest United Soccer Club U12 A girls team had an undefeated season, scoring 62 goals and allowing only 10 to be scored againsted them. The girls on the team are from Salisbury, Lakeville, North Canaan, Kent and Cornwall.
