Baseball, anyone?

Here are my picks for Major League Baseball’s Division Series games.

American League

Tampa Bay vs. Texas — The first-game matchup between Cliff Lee and David Price should be super. Whoever wins the first game wins this series. The Rangers prevail in five games.

New York vs. Minnesota — The Yanks get the nod in this series for two reasons: the middle of the lineup (Texeira, A-Rod and Cano) and pitching. Yes, I said pitching. C.C. Sabathia is one of baseball’s best big-game pitchers, if not the best. The loss of Justin Morneau is huge for the Twins. The Yankees will win in four games.

National League

Philadelphia vs. Cincinnati — The Phillies come into this series a huge favorite. But the Reds are not going to go down easy and will play loose. However, I’ll stick with the Phillies, 3-1.

San Francisco vs. Atlanta — There will be plenty of people pulling for the Braves and their retiring manager, Bobby Cox. Unfortunately, they run into a Giants team that has outstanding pitching.  In the end, I think the Giants win this series, 3-2.

Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
