A Banner Year in Winsted

WINSTED — The Winsted Journal and supporting businesses on these pages salute Laurel City students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades, who teamed up with the Winchester Collaborative for Community Learning to produce hand-painted banners for display in downtown Winsted and in East End Park.

Pictured are some of the banners produced by 85 students in town who  participated in this successful community effort this summer. The students were taught basic design principals of scale, proportion and color theory to each create a one-of-a-kind banner. Their designs reflect their personalities and the pride they have in their community.

The collaborative thanked Julie Rego, a textile designer who created the project and worked with the many classes of students. Pearson Middle School art teacher Anastasia Bartus welcomed students into her classrooms for the project, as did art teacher Valerie Berger of St. Anthony School. The collaborative also thanked Winsted Recreation Director Alesia Corso for her efforts in getting the project rolling from the start.

Take the time to walk up and down Main Street and East End Park to view the wonderful art gallery consisting of student banner designs.

Listed are the 85 students who participated in the Winsted banner project.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
