Anna Whitbeck

SALISBURY — Anna Whitbeck, 84, a lifelong resident of Salisbury, died Oct. 10, 2011, at Noble Horizons. She was the daughter of Carrie (Marston) and Walter Samuel Whitbeck.For many years, Anna was part-owner with her brothers of the family business, The Salisbury Pharmacy. She ran the soda fountain, later to become the coffee shop, and over the years employed many of the town’s young people. She was famous for her milkshakes.Anna was very active in the town. She served on the Board of Finance for 18 years and was a longtime member of the Democratic Town Committee. Anna was the first woman to be appointed to the Salisbury Bank & Trust Board of Directors, holding this position for 25 years. She was one of the original organizers of the Village Improvement Society, which eventually split to become The Market Place and Village Housing. Some of the other boards she served on are Salisbury Family Services, the Housatonic Child Care Center, Salisbury Public Health Nursing Assocation and the McChesney Fund. At the time of her death she was still active on the Salisbury Housing Committee and was excited about the new project of an additional six apartments to be constructed at Sarum Village.Anna was an avid skier. She was one of the first female directors of the Salisbury Winter Sports Association. Many customers will remember the ski placed on top of the counter on prime winter days that read, “Fountain Closed — Gone Skiing.”Anna is survived by her sister-in-law, Audrey Whitbeck; her niece, Karen Whitbeck; her nephew, Gordon Whitbeck; a cousin, John Keeler; and many Whitbeck cousins.Anna was predeceased by her brothers, Walter S. Whitbeck and Nelson “Bam” Whitbeck. Burial is private. There will be a gathering in memory of Anna on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Noble Horizons community room.Memorial contributions may be made to the Housatonic Child Care Center; the General Fund at Noble Horizons; or the EXTRAS after-school program at EXTRAS, PO.
