Pumpkin House gets a new face

MILLBROOK — Pumpkin House is the popular vintage boutique located on Franklin Avenue in Millbrook. These days it has a new owner. Tara Wing, the previous owner, moved from Millbrook and sold the store to Cailin McAllister of Hyde Park. McAllister said the store will stay the same as it is now; open to receive consignments. “We took over Jan. 3, so it’s a nice fresh start to the New Year,” McAllister said. “In December I worked with Tara to meet people and learn about the store because I fell in love with the store.”McAllister said since her opening in January, people have been bringing new consignments into the store. McAllister said she usually does consignment by appointment. However if a person comes into the store and she is there she will take care of it.“People love that it stays the same because it is a very unique and fun store — a little different from the other stores in Millbrook,” McAllister said. “When you think about it there are not a lot of places in the village where people sell clothes. It’s nice to have, and we have a lot of designer and couture fashion that we are bringing in. There are some higher end names at bargain prices.”McAllister said she has always lived in the Hudson Valley area and has a background in managing two franchise locations, sold jewelry independently and played roller derby. McAllister credits her old soul personality and taste to her attraction to Pumpkin House. “I love the people I meet and the unique things,” said McAllister. “When people come into the store everyone loves it, and it makes me happy. It’s a great feeling to have this cool place, and people want to come back.”

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
