Webutuck BOE president clarifies board’s position

WEBUTUCK— After the Webutuck Board of Education (BOE) meeting on Monday, March 12, and the subsequent March 22 article entitled, “Raises unlikely for Webutuck teachers,” BOE President Dale Culver went on the record to clarify some issues raised by The Millerton News.First, the topic of teachers’ salaries was only discussed after frequent school district watchdog Dave Shufelt asked to speak to the board and was thus put on that night’s agenda.“Dave had asked to be put on the agenda as a delegation. That is something anyone can do. Anyone can ask to be put on as a delegation and if we [the board] agree then they will be added to the agenda and given the time to speak,” said Culver.Culver also clarified that any negotiations with the teachers’ union won’t be starting until after April and will be conducted in an official capacity between the appropriate parties.“We’re hoping to meet in April to set the ground rules for negotiating, but we do not have any dates or anything set in stone yet,” he said.Culver also stressed that the issues discussed during this portion of the meeting were not topics the board wanted to discuss but were brought up by Shufelt and addressed by the board in response to his questioning.“He spoke to begin with. He brought these topics to the board. Dave had concerns that he wanted addressed and that’s what we responded to,” he said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
