Country Inn is open

SHARON — The former Sharon Motor Inn has reopened under new ownership following a total renovation. Brothers Todi and Eddie Canie, owners of Mizza’s restaurant in Lakeville, purchased the property last year from Salisbury Bank & Trust Company. It is now called the Sharon Country Inn.“We wanted to take our time before opening the inn to make sure everything was done right,” Eddie Canie said. The inn is open for business and accepting reservations. Canie said guests are already staying at the inn. He mentioned there are two weekends, one in September and one in October, when the inn is completely booked for weddings. There is still some landscaping work to be completed that may take a few months, though. The circular driveway in front of the main building has been redesigned. One-hundred-twenty-five boxwood shrubs will be installed there. Twenty-four 9-to-11-foot tall trees (12 on each side), will line the driveway entrance to the property. Six 11-feet tall trees are to be planted in the center of the circular driveway. A water fountain is being built in the center of the circle. The newly opened property has 20 guest rooms: eight with one queen bed; eight with king beds; four with two queen beds. There are four suites, where adjoining rooms have a shared connecting door.In addition to a totally renovated exterior and interior, there are extensive mechanical improvements to the property. A second septic system was added, gutter drain pipes now flow directly underground through catch pipes, rather than flowing onto the rear lawn, and a new cable television system was installed. New roofs were installed on all buildings. Extensive grading and new berms were installed to protect the property from flooding. All the rooms have brand new bathrooms. Each room is decorated with new high-quality modern, dark-wood furniture; 500 thread-count cotton bed linens; down comforters and pillows; LED flat screen television; Keurig coffee makers; individual heating/air conditioning controls; irons; stainless-steel mini refrigerator/freezers; an iHome clock radio with an iPad/iPhone/iPod dock and complimentary Wi-Fi access. All guest and public rooms are decorated with photography by Lakeville’s Anne Day. A complimentary breakfast is offered to guests.New heating and air conditioning systems were installed. A generator will be installed to provide electricity in the event of a power outage. The inn has three wings. Each has a different interior wall color. One is pale yellow, one is pale green and one is light beige. “I really want to thank all the people of Sharon who helped us make this happen,” Canie said. “It would not have happened without their suggestions.” The Canie brothers will host a grand opening celebration sometime in mid- to late April. For more information or to book a room, go to www.sharoncountryinn.com or call 860-364-0036.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
