State Police

The following information was provided by the Connecticut State Police at Troop B. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Car in wrong lane

Andreas Spaerk, 41, of Avon, Conn., was driving west in the eastbound lane of Route 44 in New Hartford March 1. At about 7:43 p.m., his 2001 Toyota 4Runner sideswiped a 2004 Saturn Ion driven by Tami Millard, 51, of New Hartford. Both operators and Spaerk’s passenger, Vaughn Parent, 48 of Riverton were taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with possible injuries. The accident is under investigation.

Pickup hits trees

Kurtis Delahanty, 24, of Winchester was driving west on Ratlum Mountain Road in Barkhamsted March 1. At about 8:29 p.m., he lost control on ice. The 2002 Chevrolet pickup went off the right shoulder. It hit several trees head-on. Passenger Aaron Thomas, 23, of Buffalo, N.Y., was taken to the hospital with a head laceration and possible broken right arm or dislocated shoulder. Delahanty refused treatment for leg pain. The accident is under investigation.

Car hits guardrail

Dorey Besaw-Rodriguez, 20, of Torrington was driving north on Route 8 in Winchester March 5. At about 12:57 p.m., near the New Street overpass, she lost control. The 1991 Acura veered left. It hit about 50 feet of guardrail. The driver and passenger Brittany Henry, 18, of Torrington were not injured. Besaw-Rodriguez was charged with failure to maintain the proper lane and failure to carry minimum vehicle insurance.

Unsafe passing

Brandon Drake, 30, of Goshen was driving east on Route 44 in New Hartford March 5. At about 2:38 p.m., his 2007 Chevrolet Express hit the right side of a 1998 Ford Escort driven by Dawn Barry, 41, of Farmington. Barry had slowed to turn right into the Pine Meadow Post Office. Drake attempted to pass on the right. The entire right side of the Escort was damaged. Drake’s van had front end damage.

Barry’s passenger, Coral Gaski, 17, of Farmington was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for evaluation of pain. Drake was charged with illegal passing on the right and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Warrant arrest

Kendra Merrill, 27, of Winsted was stopped by police on Route 8 northbound in Torrington at 4:43 p.m. March 8. A warrant was discovered. She was arrested and charged with failure to pay or plead on a $103 fine. She is to appear in Bantam Superior Court March 19.

Motorcycle crash

Thomas Silver, 61, of Riverton was riding a motorcycle east on Route 44 in Barkhamsted March 12. At about 2:55 p.m., he lost control while trying to stop for traffic. The 2001 Harley Davidson fell onto its left side and slid across the road. Silver was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with facial lacerations. He was given a written warning for following too closely.

Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
