Three major sales on single day in Salisbury

SALISBURY — The real estate market has been in something of a doldrums of late, and when any significant properties move it makes observers wonder if it is a sign of recovery.Three notable sales were logged last Friday, March 2, by Harney Real Estate. Elyse Harney reported that clients closed on three homes, all valued at over a million dollars, that day.“It was a momentous day,” Harney said. When asked if she feels this is a trend, she chose not to make a strong prediction but explained that an unusual circumstance triggered the three sales, which were all related.Key was a house on Long Pond Road that was built on spec and originally listed at $5.8 million. The house did not move and was eventually given to Salisbury Bank and Trust, which listed the property at $3.4 million.Harney said it was unusual that the bank allowed the real estate agency to list the property as “bank owned.” She believes that sparked some interest. The Long Pond Road property sold for $2.9 million to another buyer who had a home at 80 Belgo Road. The Belgo Road house was listed at $1.895 million and sold on March 2 for $1.85 million. The third house was sold to someone who had made an unsuccessful bid on the Long Pond Road property. That buyer purchased (on March 2) for $2.24 million a new Wells Hill Road property that was listed for $2.5 million. “Advertising the Long Pond Road property as ‘bank owned’ spurred the other sales,” Harney said. “I think it indicates that there is a pent-up desire.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
