Bizarre week for NFL leads to holiday picks

Last week’s record, 8-8; for the season, 145-79. Pick of the Week, 0-1; for the season, 13-3.

I feel fortunate to have gone 8-8 in what was undoubtedly one of the most bizarre weeks of the season. The Packers were beaten by the Chiefs, the Jets lost big to the Eagles, the Giants lost to the Skins at home and Seattle thumped the Bears in Chicago. Seriously, how many people picked the Chiefs over the Packers?

All I know is there are just two weeks left in the regular season and there are still plenty of teams left in the hunt for a place in the playoffs. For me, the regular season ends this week. Since the paper takes a week off between the holidays, I have to give you my picks for the last week of the season in advance, which is always a challenge. Regardless, let’s get on with it. Good luck with your picks and here’s wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thursday, Dec. 22
Houston at Indianapolis — I don’t think the Texans want to lose two in a row, so I’ll stick with them in this one, 24-20.

Saturday, Dec. 24
Miami at New England — this could be a trap game but rarely do you see the Pats losing at this time of the year. I’ll go with New England in this matchup, 28-23.

Cleveland at Baltimore — This is a must-win for the Ravens if they want to stay even with the Steelers in the division race. Ravens win, 24-17.

Arizona at Cincinnati — The Bengals still have a chance at the playoffs, as do the Cards, so I’ll stick with the home team in this one. The Bengals win, 23-19.

Minnesota at Washington — It’s been a lost season for both teams, but the Skins are coming off a big win over the Giants, so that should carry over to this week. Washington wins, 19-13.

Denver at Buffalo — The Tebow train was derailed by the Pats but the Bills present a much better matchup for the Broncos. I’ll stick with Denver on the road, 20-17.

St. Louis at Pittsburgh — This is my Pick of the Week. The Steelers will rebound from last week and win this one, 30-13.

New York Giants at New York Jets — These are two unpredictable teams with unpredictable quarterbacks, and the game is a must-win for both. Take your pick. I say the Giants will prevail, 33-27.

Tampa Bay at Carolina — Let’s not forget that Cam Newton is also enjoying a tremendous rookie season in the NFL. I like that trend to continue. The Panthers win, 24-19.

Jacksonville at Tennessee — The Titans must win this week or face elimination from the playoffs. That should be enough incentive. Tennessee wins, 20-10.

Oakland at Kansas City — Although the Raiders’ chances are somewhat better than the Chiefs when it comes to making the playoffs, the Chiefs do have a chance. I’m not sold on the Raiders as of yet so I’ll stick with the Chiefs, 24-23.

San Diego at Detroit — One more win clinches a playoff spot for the Lions, and though the Chargers are playing well, I still like Detroit, 27-24.

Philadelphia at Dallas — This is another game that is a must for both teams. It appears that the Eagles are back on track and because I don’t have a lot of faith in Tony Romo in big games, I’m going with Mike Vick and the Eagles to win, 33-27.

San Francisco at Seattle — The 49ers are in but the Seahawks are still alive. What does that mean? Seattle wins at home, 23-20.

Sunday, Dec. 25
Chicago at Green Bay — The Bears must win to have any chance at the playoffs while the Packers are now in a position to rest a few players and get some others healthy. However, this is a pride game and I think the Packers will find a way to win, 24-19.

Monday, Dec. 26
Atlanta at New Orleans — The Saints are in and the Falcons should be. This game is a momentum game for the Saints while the Falcons will close out the season next week at home against Tampa Bay. With that said, I see Drew Brees putting up big numbers again as the Saints win, 35-30.

Looking ahead: Picks for Sunday, Jan. 1
Eagles over Skins, 28-17; Steelers over Browns, 20-13; Bengals over Ravens, 24-23; Dolphins over Jets, 24-19; Saints over Panthers, 35-27; Falcons over Bucs, 27-16; Lions over Packers, 28-24; Niners over Rams, 23-19; Jags over Colts, 24-17; Patriots over Bills, 30-24; Texans over Titans, 20-17; Vikings over Bears, 24-21; Giants over Dallas 30-23; Broncos over Chiefs, 20-16; Raiders over Chargers, 24-20; and Cards over Seahawks, 24-21.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
