Ralph I. Scoville

WEST CORNWALL — Ralph I. Scoville, 92, of Town Street died at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Dec. 14, 2011. He was the husband of Thalia (Hicock) Scoville. Ralph was born in Winsted, on April 15, 1919, the only child of Grace (Brown) and Frederick Ralph Scoville. He lived his entire life in West Cornwall. He began his early education with Mrs. Elsie Cochrane, then went to the West Cornwall School in what is now the West Cornwall Library, finishing at the Gilbert School in Winsted. Uncle Sam beckoned in August 1941. Basic training was in Fort Bragg, N.C., in the 9th Division. Active combat duty began in November 1942, with the first amphibious landing in North Africa and continued through Sicily, Belgium, across Europe and ended at the Elbe River, where the U.S. troops met the Russians. Driving an ammunition truck he amassed over 400 days of combat duty.Upon discharge he served the town of Cornwall as a selectman and as town road foreman, before becoming a full-time dairy farmer.On April 5, 1947, he married Thalia Painter Hicock, daughter of Evelyn (Williams) and Ely Pierce Hicock, in the Federal Church of Southbury, Conn. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Grace Evelyn Kandefer of New Hartford, Eliza Allen Cleaveland of Bloomfield, Frederick Ralph Scoville of West Cornwall, Ralph Ingersol Scoville of Denville, N.J., and Maria Wadhams Bonetti of East Canaan; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Ensign Scoville. A memorial service was celebrated Dec. 18 at the North Cornwall Meeting House. Burial, with full military honors, was held at the North Cornwall Cemetery before the service. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
