Soccer players named All-state athletes

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) seniors Myles Clohessy and R. J. Thompson, both from Cornwall, were named Class S Boys Soccer All-state players.HVRHS co-head soccer coach Hoot Belter said, “They are both classy young men who have worked hard with all their friends to be above-average soccer players. They are two of many guys who embraced the team concept, took their individual skills and made a successful season as far as win-loss record.”Co-head soccer coach Jim Terrall said, “R.J. is a rock, Miles is a river. R.J. is a quiet presence, a solid player and a solid character. Miles has more of a flair and is more noticeable. They each bring their individuality to the game. They’ve had a strong team around them, a strong supporting cast that allows them to do what they can do. When you make a pass, you have to have someone to receive it.”“These two guys are diverse,” Belter added. “They’re both going to be in the school play. R.J. ranks second in his class in academics.”“I’m really excited about being named All-state,” Clohessy said. “R.J. and I play soccer all the time. It was worth all the time we put into practice to win this award.” “We would not have made All-state without the team’s great record,” Thompson added. The two star players and several other strong members of the team will graduate this spring.“We are going to miss this group of seniors,” Terrall said. “But the program is really strong and we have a good feeder system.”Thompson and Clohessy will receive their awards at a statewide dinner to be held Jan. 29 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
