Black Goose adds beer, wine to menu

SHARON—Robert Caeners, who has spent his entire career working in the food service industry, opened the Black Goose Grill in the shopping plaza in August. It has quickly become a popular gathering spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner.The grill’s newest attraction: It has been granted a wine and beer license, so the restaurant will now offer domestic and imported beer and wine with meals.Caeners said the most popular items he serves now are the “six to eight daily specials, which always sell well. And our burgers and salads are very popular. Our breakfast wraps also sell very well.” On a recent weekday lunctime visit, there were three soup specials: New England clam chowder, French onion and chicken with rosemary and potato. Some of that day’s lunch specials included a turkey Reuben on rye ($7.95), quiche with house salad ($6.95) and a Cuban panini sandwich with ham, pork and pepperjack cheese ($8.95).Everything sold at the restaurant is made in-house, including the baked goods, which Caeners said allows the restaurant to maintain quality control over the food it serves. Local ingredients are used whenever possible. The restaurant now has two experienced chefs in addition to Caeners. The entire menu is available for take-out. Caeners said take-out is most popular at lunch and dinner. A new menu will be introduced this week and Sunday brunch will be offered soon. The restaurant plans to offer occasional wild game nights. On Friday nights, there is a prime rib special with Yorkshire pudding for $16.95.The Black Goose is closed Mondays. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 7:30 a.m.to 3 p.m on Sundays.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
