Last week wasn’t so hot

Last week’s record, 7-7; for the season, 84-46. Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 8-1.

The only thing I can say about last week is I managed to break even. Selecting my picks last week was really strange because of the power outage caused by the snowstorm. I was reduced to writing them by hand and, I don’t know about you folks, but I haven’t done that much handwriting in many years.

I managed to hit my Pick of the Week, and I did mention that if I wanted the Giants to win I had to pick the Patriots. My Steelers disappointed me, and who could have figured that the Dolphins would not only win, but demolish the Chiefs?

I’m back on the computer now and looking forward to making up for last week’s mess. We’re back to a full 16-game schedule with some great matchups, so here we go.

Thursday, Nov. 10

Oakland at San Diego — It looks like the bubble has burst for the Raiders, while it appears quarterback David Rivers is rounding into form for the Chargers. I’ll go with San Diego, 33-24.

Sunday, Nov. 13

Detroit at Chicago — This is a huge division game for both teams as they pursue a playoff spot. The Lions are coming off a bye week and should be well-rested and healthier. The Bears are coming off a big win over the Eagles and will also have a short week to prepare. For some unknown reason, I’m going with the Lions, 27-24.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis — This game is one that the Colts actually have a chance of winning, but I don’t think that will happen. I’ll take the Jags, 20-13.

Denver at Kansas City — Denver quarterback Tim Tebow is drawing a lot of attention, but I can’t see the Broncos winning two in a row on the road. I also can’t see the Chiefs losing two in a row at home. I’ll stick with Kansas City in this one, 19-17.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati — This is a big game for Big Ben and the Steelers, who cannot afford to lose any more ground to the Ravens. The Bengals continue to surprise everyone, but I just can’t see the Steelers losing two in a row at this point in the season. I’ll stick with Pittsburgh, 24-20

Buffalo at Dallas — This is another big game for both teams, neither of which can afford another loss. The Bills should do better against the Dallas defense than they did against the Jets, but can they stop Romo and the Boys? I think they can. The Bills win this one, 24-21.

New Orleans at Atlanta — Here’s another huge game, and I’m going with my heart for this one. The Falcons are good, but I really like the Saints. New Orleans wins this one, 34-27.

St. Louis at Cleveland — there won’t be many people watching this one, but if you do, I think the Browns will win at home, 20-17. This is my Pick of the Week.

Washington at Miami — The Redskins are struggling and need to fire their owner if possible. The Dolphins actually won a game and should make it two in a row. Dolphins win, 27-17.

Houston at Tampa Bay — Another good matchup between two teams on the rise. The Texans have been playing well, but my gut tells me that Tampa Bay will prevail at home, 23-20.

Tennessee at Carolina — The Titans are backpedaling while the Panthers, win or lose, seem to give a good effort. I’ll stick with Cam Newton and the Panthers, 24-19.

Arizona at Philadelphia — The Eagles keep giving up the lead late in games, but that will not happen this week. Philly wins this one, 30-20.

Baltimore at Seattle — The Ravens must guard against a letdown following their big win over Pittsburgh. The Seahawks will play tough, but in the end the Ravens come out on top, 27-19.

New York Giants at San Francisco — In my eyes, a late rally against the Patriots did nothing to change my mind about Eli Manning. For anyone to put him in the same class as his brother (or Brady, Brees, Big Ben or Aaron Rodgers) is ridiculous. With that said, he does find ways to win regardless of how much luck is involved. The 49ers defense will be a tougher test for Manning and the Giants, and that defense should carry the Niners to a 20-17 victory.

New England at New York Jets — I see a repeat of last year’s two games. The Patriots win the first one and the Jets come back to win the second one. Look for the Jets defense to get all over Brady while their offense does enough to win, 23-20.

Monday, Nov. 14

Minnesota at Green Bay — The Vikings are showing signs of life, but it will take more than that to win in Green Bay. The Packers continue to roll, 30-13.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
