Matthew C. Nagle Jr.

NORTH CANAAN — Matthew C. Nagle Jr., 80, passed away on  April 24, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. Matt, known to his friends as “Champ,” was born on July 8, 1938, in North Canaan, the son of the late Matthew C. Nagle Sr. and Alice (Gandelli) Nagle. 

Matt grew up in North Canaan but spent his last two years of high school in Florida with his father. He graduated from  Miami Jackson High School in 1956 and returned to North Canaan. Matt proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps.  

Champ was a carpenter by trade and a longtime member of the Carpenter’s Union, from 1970 until he retired in 1998. 

He was a charter member of the Marine Corps League, a member of the Devil Dogs, the American Veterans Post 24 in Torrington and the American Legion in Sheffield, Mass. 

Matt was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Rodorigo. 

He is survived by his only child, his daughter, Alice (Nagle) Macchi and his son-in-law, Scott Macchi; his two grandchildren, Matthew Macchi and Samantha Macchi; his half-brother, Michael Nagle; several nieces and nephews; and a community of friends and fellow Marine Corps brothers.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday May 4, at 11 a.m. in St. Martin of Tours Parish at St. Joseph Church in North Canaan.

Burial will follow with full military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery in North Canaan. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 3, at the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan from 5 to 8  p.m.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Marine Corps League Northwest Detachment 042, P.O. Box 844, North Canaan, CT 06018, Academic Award.
