Aldea Elizabeth Buckley

WASSAIC — Aldea Elizabeth Buckley, 85, a longtime resident of Wassaic, passed away on March 29, 2019, at Sharon Health Care Center.

Mrs. Buckley worked as a housekeeper at Wassaic developmental center for 25 years, later working in food service at Webutuck Schools and as a certified nurse assistant.

Born on Sept. 11, 1933, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Marie (Caron) and Everett  Buckley.

On Sept. 24, 1955, in Amenia, she married Charles Buckley, who predeceased her on Jan. 13, 1987.

How does one sum up 85 years of a life as a daughter, sister, wife and mother?  Is the answer found in her easy laugh, in her practical, earthy yet insightful approach to all she did?  Is it found in her love of dogs and her uncanny ability to communicate with them?  Or perhaps in her desire “to be a good person and help people?”  Is it found in the tragedies she weathered …?

For a long time, I thought if I were able to just make an apple pie the way she did, I would understand everything.

Despite watching her countless times make perfect apple pies with light, flaky, impossibly thin crusts and asking numerous questions about how she did it, I was never able to “just feel the dough with your hands.”  It is still a mystery.

Eighty-five years seems ample time for a crystal clear image of this beautiful soul who was my mother — but it is not.  Now she is gone. Thank you, Mom, for this dance. Godspeed on your journey.

Mrs. Buckley is survived by two daughters, Charlanne Buckley and her companion, William Scott, of Gardiner, N.Y., and Cindy Buckley of Loudon, N.H.; and a sister, Marian Milton of Millerton.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Buckley was predeceased by two sons, Gary and Charles “Spike” Buckley; and two brothers, Lucien and Wayne Taylor.

Private graveside services and burial have taken place. To send the family an online condolence, go to www.hufcutfuneralhome.com.
