Pine Plains volleyball teams bump out two wins

PINE PLAINS — The Stissing Mountain High School girls volleyball teams earned two wins against Saugerties on Wednesday, Oct. 5.The varsity team only needed to play four sets to secure their win. The scores were 25-20, 25-11, 18-25 and 25-21.“The thing that struck me the most is that they played with emotion. They were excited. We play better that way,” said coach Bob Stevenson. “As a team, it was our best match of the year.”Earlier in the evening, the junior varsity team took to the floor, winning two out of three sets for the overall win. The scores were 25-17, 16-25 and 27-25.Anna Lonczak had four service points. Emma Boucher and Acadia Generelli both had eight service points.“They got down and they did not stop,” said coach Sarah Stevenson. “They just kept coming back, and that made all the difference in the world.”The coach said that she has watched her players improve by leaps and bounds throughout the season. At the end of the game, Linda Ye earned her libero shirt.“She is thrilled to death. She’s the one floating home tonight,” said Sarah Stevenson. The libero shirt, which is a different color from the other members, allows a player to go on or off the floor without subbing in order to rotate repeatedly through the back row.“You’ve got to know how to use a libero,” said the coach. “It really gives you the ability to use that person very strategically.”Stevenson said she awarded the shirt to Ye after the student proved that she knew the floor rules of a libero and that she wasn’t afraid of diving for the ball.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
