Perfect record on Pick of the Week; can I do it again?

Last week, 10-6; for the season, 44-20

Pick of the Week 1-0; for the season, 4-0

Reaching double digits in wins is always my goal, so I can live with 10-6. However, starting this week, there are only 13 games per week, so I’ll have to be happy with eight or nine wins.

As always, there were a couple of surprises that cost me, especially the 49er comeback to win in Philly. At the same time, I was rather pleased with my pick of the Lions over Dallas. There’s nothing I enjoy more than watching Jerry Jones squirm in his luxury box. The Packers, my Pick of the Week, was a no-brainer, so I remain perfect in that category.

This week there are a number of good matchups, so let’s get it on.

Sunday, Oct. 9

New Orleans at Carolina — There were plenty of doubts about Cam Newton before the start of the season, but they’re fading rapidly. The Saints continue to roll behind Drew Brees, and although it will be tough, the Saints continue to win, 33-27.

Philadelphia at Buffalo — This is a big game for both teams. The Eagles are reeling, while the Bills need a big home victory to validate their early success. I’m sticking with the upstart Bills, 24-23.

Seattle at New York Giants — This is probably a good way to ruin my perfect record, but I’ll take the Giants as my Pick of the Week, 27-17.

Cincinnati at Jacksonville — The Bengals managed to comeback against Bills, but can they now win on the road? I doubt it. I’ll stick with the Jags, 20-17.

Kansas City at Indianapolis — I’m not sure the Colts can beat anyone right now, but that means I should go against myself and pick them. I’ll take the Colts on a hunch, 23-19.

Tennessee at Pittsburgh — I could easily pick against my Steelers again this week, especially if Big Ben is out. The Titans are good, but I’ll stick with Pittsburgh, 24-20.

Arizona at Minnesota — Arizona gave the Giants a win last week, while the Vikings failed on the road at KC. Neither team is going anywhere soon, so I’ll take the Vikings at home, 27-23.

Oakland at Houston — This is a good matchup. The Raiders are coming off a disappointing loss to the Pats, while the Texans picked up a big home win over the Steelers. Barring a letdown, I’ll stick with the Texans in a tight one, 27-24.

Tampa Bay at San Francisco — Another good matchup. The Bucs are tough, but they are going cross-country following a Monday night game, and that’s tough. The 49ers picked up a huge road win in Philly and should win this one, 23-20

New York Jets at New England — Head coach Rex Ryan should concentrate on helping his team join the elite rather than telling everyone that they are. The Jets will play tough, but Brady and the boys are rolling.  I’ll stick with the Pats as my pick of the week, 27-20.

San Diego at Denver — You better be careful with this game. The Chargers are due for a “stinker” on the road. I’m going with Denver at home, 24-23.

Green Bay at Atlanta — This is definitely a good matchup. The Falcons are tough at home, but at this point in the season the Packers look almost unbeatable. I’ll take the Packers, 37-28.

Monday, Oct. 10

Chicago at Detroit — Sooner or later the Lions are going to run out of late-game heroics. The Bears will play tough, but I’m sticking with the Lions again this week, 27-20.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
