Housy boys soccer wins, ties

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys soccer team traveled to Winsted to play the Gilbert Yellowjackets last week. Housatonic came home with a 5-0 win.Three minutes into the game, Thomas Gailes opened the scoring for Housatonic. Myles Clohessy tallied the second goal 11 minutes later, followed by Matthew Matsudaira two minutes after that. Two minutes into the second half, Gailes scored a second time. Jordan Long scored his first varsity goal late in the game. Wilson Terrall, Liam Lynch, Clohessy, Matsudaira and Wylie Fresne each had an assist. Last Friday, Sept. 30, defending Berkshire League champions Nonnewaug came to Housatonic for the Mountaineers’ first home game of the season. Each team had opportunities to put the ball in goal, but the strength of the defense and goalkeeper play ended up being the highlight of the game for each team. Steven Wingard, Andrew Davis, John Hare, Terrall and R.J. Thompson met the challenges Nonnewaug threw at them on the defensive end. With about a minute in regulation, Nonnewaug had a break-away opportunity. Keeper Willy Yahn came out of the goal, taking the angle away, and stopped a point blank-shot, which he then pounced on to cover up to preserve what ended up being a 0-0 tie in regulation. Two five-minute overtime periods saw more of the same type of action, with neither team scoring, the final score being a 0-0 tie. This brings Housatonic’s record to 4-0-1 at this point in the season. The boys JV team beat Gilbert 4-1 and Nonnewaug 3-1, raising their record to 4-1 for the season.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
