WINSTED — Monique Parks-Abreu was chosen to serve as a member of the Board of Education during a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8.Parks-Abreu was the only member of the public to apply for the seat, which was vacated when former Chairman Kathy O’Brien resigned in August.Parks-Abreu graduated from The Gilbert School in 1998 and currently works at Founders Insurance Group in Torrington as an account manager. Her husband, Braulio, is a freelance hair dresser. She has two children in the school system: Angelina and Isaiah.Parks-Abreu is also running for a Board of Education seat on the Democratic ticket for this November’s elections.“Why am I interested in the board? Because I have a vested interest in the town,” she said. “I want to see Winsted thrive, and education is a good place to start.”As for the recent controversies facing the Board of Education, including the lawsuit filed by the board against the town over the minimum budget requirement (MBR), Parks-Abreu said she has no position on the situation.“Honestly, I haven’t really had enough information other than what I have read in the paper and hearing public opinion,” she said. “I can’t answer that in an educated matter.”She said she would like to improve the problems that the school district is facing. When asked which problems, Parks-Abreu would not say.“As I said before, I have to get all the facts first,” she said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
