The Fountains residents remember 9/11

MILLBROOK — On Sunday, Sept. 11, members of The Fountains retirement community in Millbrook came together to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and those who lost their lives that day. Community Life Director Teressa DelCampo asked residents if they would like to honor anyone who lost their life or helped save a life that day. She also welcomed residents to share their thoughts, experiences and reflections of Sept. 11.“It was just our own little way of remembering the day for the 10th year anniversary,” said DelCampo. “It was open to the public, but it was mostly for the residents.”Residents of The Fountains gathered on the cool morning at the flag pole, sharing poems and words with one another about the tragic day. Louis D’Agostino shared a New York Times article he read about a woman who watched the attacks unfold in New York City, and how it impacted his own thoughts about Sept. 11.“She watched the events from her apartment,” said D’Agostino. “The images she carried haunt her. There were witnesses to this tragedy. She lived in the city and saw it all. It’s very difficult for those who weren’t there to explain it. What we could probably say is we are a great country but we are not in the position where we can’t be troubled by outside people. “Especially being here at The Fountains,” he added. “We have a pretty good collection of people here and I think if we have decent thoughts of each other we will all be better off.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
