Gladys (Stevens) Grytzell

NORTH CANAAN — Gladys (Stevens) Grytzell, 90, died Aug. 5, 2011, at Geer Village. She was the widow of Arthur Grytzell. She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in North Canaan, the daughter of the late Edith (Lawrence) and Jarvis Stevens. She lived in the North Canaan area for most of her life, enjoying her home on Prospect Street in Lakeville in her later years.Gladys served in the military during World War II and received recognition on July 22, 2008, for her patriotism and sacrifice. For many years she worked as a clerk in the Hartford area. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Phillip Ostapko of Canton Center, Conn., Janette Richardson of Laconia, N.H., Linda Jenkins of North Granby, Conn., Daniel Ostapko of Mahopac, N.Y., Lawrence Stevens, Joan E. Thitchener and Cathy Washburn, all of West Cornwall, and Marsha Sarno of Southfield, Mass. She was predeceased by all of her siblings, Florine Wetmore, Edith Stevens, Pearl Rhoades, Ruth Ostapko and Holbrook and Lawrence Stevens.A memorial service will be held at the North Canaan Congregational Church in East Canaan on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. The Kenny Funeral Homes in Sharon has charge of arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
