Derby hits a home run for CRIS charity

WINSTED — Seventeen people participated in a benefit home run derby at Walker Field on Saturday, Aug. 13.The event was to benefit Connecticut Radio Information System (CRIS), based in Windsor, which provides specially programmed radios that broadcast 24 hours a day to the blind and handicapped who cannot read printed material.According to event organizer Peter Cianciolo, local chairman for CRIS and a member of the Lions Club District 23B, the event raised $800 for CRIS.“To me, that is really good,” Cianciolo said. “I think the event went very well. We’re going to do it again next year.”The event brought plenty of home run hitters to the area, including brothers Ben and Steve Marcus from West Springfield, Mass.“To hit a home run, you have to put everything in it,” Ben Marcus said. “The more you put everything into your swing, the higher it gets.”The winner in the 10- to 13-year-old age group was Daniel Winkler with nine home runs.Logan Marchi won the 14- to 16-year-old age group with five home runs.In the 17- to 39-year-old age group, Justin Morhardt won with 16 home runs.And in the 40-year-old and older age group, Kurt Root won with four home runs.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
