Youth soccer gears up

WINSTED — Winsted Youth Soccer will hold the first games of the season sometime after Labor Day. The organization held its last signup event on Thursday, July 28.While she could not give an exact count of how many children have signed up for the league, organization secretary Nicole Root said registration has been strong for the coming season.“It’s great to see all these signups because I think all sports are important for children,” Root said. “It teaches them how to work as a team and they learn a lot. Plus, it’s fun at the same time.”The organization offers several leagues for both boys and girls of all ages.Organization President Joe Nichols said sports and physical activity is vital for children as they grow up.“Soccer is great especially because it gets children off of their butts,” Nichols said. “It has been proven that kids who participate in activities do better in school. It also keeps them physically fit and more socially involved. The league is important because it’s good for the community in the sense that it creates cohesion between the children and the community. Also, if a family wants to move to Winsted and they see that we have programs for children, the more they will be eager to move to the town.”As of press time, schedules for this season had not yet been posted on the organization’s website at www.winstedyouthsoccer.com.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
