George Edwin Smith

WASSAIC — George Edwin Smith, 80, a six-year resident of Okeechobee, Fla., and former resident of Wassaic, died July 24, 2011, at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. He was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Poughkeepsie, the son of the late Evelyn Pearl (Hymes) and Harry Smith. From 1953 to 1955, Mr. Smith served in the United States Army. He was an insurance adjuster for 30 years and was employed by Toplis & Harding, Inc. in Newburgh, N.Y., before retiring in 1993. Mr. Smith was a past member of the Wassaic Fire Company and was active in the VFW Posts in Millerton and Okeechobee. He was an avid hunter and loved nature and his dogs. Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters, Patricia Redmond of Salisbury, Pamela Smith-Lyle and her husband, Thomas, of Ballston Lake, N.Y. and Cindy Fink and her husband, David, of Lebanon, N.J.; a sister, Margaret Williams of Lakeland, Fla.; a half brother, Charles Drum of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Josh and Allie Lyle, Rebecca Sherwood, Jennifer Redmond and Zachary, Benjamin, Aaron, Jacob and Elizabeth Fink; and six great-grandchildren.Funeral services were held July 30 at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains, the Rev. Daniel Groh officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Valley View Cemetery in Dover Plains. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post 178, PO Box 22, Millerton, NY 12546. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
