Mavis E. (Cole) Cross

NORTH CANAAN — Mavis E. (Cole) Cross, 88, passed away peacefully on Nov. 17, 2018, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation with her family by her side. She was the widow of Arthur B. Cross, who predeceased her in 2012.

Mavis was born on Sept. 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Kathleen (Green) and Walter Cole. She grew up in Salt Point, N.Y.

Mavis was a devoted wife to Arthur for 57 years. She was a homemaker and the proud mother of six children.

She is survived by her one son, Glen Cross and his wife, Carla, of Sheffield, Mass.; her five daughters in Connecticut, Sue Ann D’Adamo and her husband, John, of Northford, Lorraine Gurz and her husband, Alan, of Cheshire, Gail Massey and her husband, Bryant of Sharon, Karen Cracas and her husband, Scott, of Torrington, and Marilyn Cross of North Canaan; 14 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; her siblings, Jacqueline Fowler, Kenneth Cole, Lenora Vendt and Emerson Cole and their families; her sister-in-law, Carol Minck and her family; and her niece, Dottie MacRitchie and her husband, Joe, of Kent.

Mavis’s family was the most important thing in her life. She was most happy when surrounded by her entire family and always asked what each family member was doing and worried and cared for them all. This motherly quality carried over to the residents and staff at Geer during her final year.

Burial was private, but friends and family were welcome to attend a memorial service and reception for Mavis on Nov. 21 at the VFW  Hall in North Canaan. The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations in memory of Mavis may be made to Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation, 99 S. Canaan Road, North Canaan, CT 06018, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
