June F. Stanton

LAKEVILLE — June F. Stanton, 96, formerly of Farnam Road, died July 7, 2011, at Noble Horizons. She was the loving wife of the late John Stanton.June was born June 30, 1915, in Millerton, daughter of the late Caroline (Sickendick) and Fred Barth. For many years she worked for the Salisbury Bank & Trust Co. She was a cofounder of the Ladies Auxiliary and also was involved with the Lakeville Democratic Town Committee and other civic activities. She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville. June is survived by her daughter, Betsy Clark, and her husband, Paul, of New Jersey; and her sister, Dorothy Rossman. In addition to her husband John, she was predeceased by her daughter, Sue Stanton; two sisters, Eleanor “Nora” Lind and Ceil Barth; and two brothers, Fred Barth and Charles Barth.A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church on July 11. Burial was private. Memorial contributions may be made to Noble Horizons, 17 Cobble Road, Salisbury, CT 06068 or the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance, PO Box 582, Salisbury, CT 06068. The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
