Rockin’ the night away with Elvis

MILLBROOK — Saturday, June 11, Elvis fans came out to the St. Joseph School’s first ever Elvis Presley Tribute. Michael Vegas is an Elvis tribute artist; he performed with his band at the event. Rosalie Fegan, head of St. Joseph’s School, said that Vegas is from Westchester County and regularly performs at Traditions 118 restaurant in Garnite Springs.“He’s got a well-known reputation,” said Fegan, adding Vegas was a hit. “People who were in our audience last night were very impressed with the quality of his voice. The band was absolutely amazing and it really gave our students something interesting to learn about Elvis.”Fegan added that some teachers are ardent Elvis fans and were very pleased with the performance.Fegan said that about 106 people came out Saturday evening for the event, which was a fundraiser for the school, the biggest and last one of the year.“It was a combination of parents and students — people who want to support the school,” she said. “It was quite a nice cross section of those who support us.” The buffet dinner served included a specialty bean recipe from an Elvis cookbook. “Everybody was ecstatic about that because it was very good. We were all quite impressed with it,” Fegan said. She also said the crowd enjoyed the event and wanted to see Vegas again.“The response was so amazing; he was given a standing ovation and people wanted to know when he could come back,” she said. “Maybe we will put that into action for next year considering how the response was so positive.”The headmaster added she hopes those who attended the event leave with a better sense of Elvis’ historical impact. “This just gives people an idea about the era he sang in and why it was of interest to history, because music changed dramatically after he came on the scene,” she said. “[It’s nice to be able to give people] an idea of the effect that one person can have on an entire industry.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
