Help with home ownership now around the corner

MILLERTON — Hudson River Housing has announced the opening of a satellite office of the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County in Millerton. The expansion will allow the agency to better serve the communities of northeastern Dutchess County by providing more convenient access to services. The northeast branch will be located within the North East Community Center (NECC) on 51 South Center St. In celebration of the expansion, the agency will hold an open house and community gathering on Thursday, June 9, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., with the program beginning promptly at 2 p.m. Hudson River Housing staff will provide an introduction to the agency and the services provided by the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center, including home ownership preparation education, how to maximize energy efficiency in your home, landlord training, budget and credit counseling and more, and the opportunities that are available to residents through these programs.There will be an opportunity for questions and answers. Other service providers have also been invited to attend and share information on their programs in the area. Light refreshments will be provided by McEnroe Organic Farm.Hudson River Housing serves the affordable housing need in Dutchess County. Its services span from homeless housing and prevention to post-purchase counseling for homeowners. In 2007, Hudson River Housing launched the NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County, significantly expanding the scope of its services for homebuyers and homeowners at a critical time in the housing market. The center promotes homeownership, creates educated and confident homebuyers and assists homeowners in preserving their investment. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
