Half of the league still alive for playoffs

Last week, 9-7; for the season, 117-73. Pick of the Week, 0-1; for the season, 7-6.

It was not the best of weeks, but I can live with a 9-7 week at this stage of the season.

With just three games remaining in the regular season, only one team, the Falcons, have qualified for the playoffs in the NFC while there is as many as 11 other teams who can still make it in. The AFC is not quite as crowded with three teams already in — the Broncos, Texans and Patriots — but there are still three to five teams that have a legitimate shot of getting in. Do the math — better than half of the 32 teams in the league are still alive, and that’s just what the NFL wants to see.

I missed my Pick of the Week again. Reporter Shaw Israel Izikson also lost his pick while Editor Michael Marciano was on vacation. Marciano has agreed to count that pick as his own, which still keeps him two games ahead of me.

Here’s hoping we all have a good week with our picks.

Thursday, Dec. 6

Denver at Oakland

The Broncos must protect against a letdown on the road, and I think they will. I like Denver in this one, 30-13.

Sunday, Dec. 9

St. Louis at Buffalo

Both of these teams still have a chance at the playoffs regardless of how little it may be. I always like the Bills at home. Buffalo wins, 24-20.

Dallas at Cincinnati

I’m still not sold on the Cowboys going to the playoffs. I stick with Andy Dalton and the Bengals in this one, 27-23.

Kansas City at Cleveland

The Chiefs picked up a very emotional win last week, but they will not fare as well against the improving Browns. Cleveland wins this one, 20-16.

Philadelphia at Tampa Bay

The Bucs are very much in it while the Eagles are preparing for the post Andy Reid era. I’ll stick with the Bucs at home, 30-20. Editor’s note: I think Philly takes this one, 28-20.

Baltimore at Washington

The Ravens are not as tough on defense as they used to be, and that will play right into RGBIII’s hand. I’ll take the red-hot Redskins in this one, 23-19.

Atlanta at Carolina

I don’t think anybody can stop the Falcons at this stage barring a huge letdown. I don’t see it happening here. Atlanta wins, 34-23.

N.Y. Jets at Jacksonville

I just wish the Jets would go away and come back with a new coach and QB. They should be able to handle the Jags, but I have my doubts. I’ll stick with Jacksonville in this one, 19-17.

Tennessee at Indianapolis

It’s awful hard to go against Andrew Luck and the Colts, and I’m not going to at this stage. I’ll take Indy in this one as my Pick of the Week, 34-17.

Chicago at Minnesota

I’m still not big on the Bears. If Percy Harvin is healthy, Chicago could be in for a long day. I’ll stick with Adrian Peterson and the Vikings in this one, 23-20.

San Diego at Pittsburgh

You have to admire Charley Batch and the Steelers. The wily old veteran came through big time against the Ravens, and even if Big Ben isn’t back you’ve got to like them in this game. I’ll stick with my Steelers, 24-17.

Miami at San Francisco

The Dolphins are on life support, but they are not dead yet. Notice I say not yet. Niners win this one, hopefully with QB Smith at the helm, 27-20.

Arizona at Seattle

Keep an eye on these Seahawks and their rookie QB Wilson. The Cards just don’t score enough, so I’m sticking with Seattle at home, 29-16.

New Orleans at N.Y. Giants

The Saints will be out of it with a loss, while the Giants are facing a must win if they want to stay in first place in the division. I think they will. Manning and the Giants win a 33-27 shootout.

Detroit at Green Bay

It won’t be a gimmy, but I like the Packers at home in this one, 30-27.

Monday, Dec. 10

Houston at New England

The Patriots have a great offense and a solid defense. The Texans have a very good offense and a very good defense. What does that translate to? I think the Patriots win, 34-30.

Sam Lamott

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Cynthia Hochswender

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
