Brownies collect for Little Guild

SHARON — To fulfill its community service project, Brownie Troop 40374 is organizing a donations drive to benefit the Little Guild of St. Francis for the Welfare of Animals in West Cornwall. “We chose the Little Guild because they help injured animals get better and find homes,” said Brownie Volunteer Eleanor Mooney. “We also learned that the Little Guild relies only on donations to feed and take care of their animals,” said Brownie volunteer Kaylyn Vogel. From May 25 through June 13, the Brownies will collect canned or dry dog and cat food, as well as pet toys, blankets and treats. Donation boxes can be found at Shear Illusions, Sharon Farm Market, Sharon Pharmacy and the town’s post office. In addition, a “live” donation box will be placed at the Hotchkiss Library on Saturday, June 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., during the library’s Summer Reading Celebration, One World, Many Stories. Brownie Troop 40374 will be available to receive donations for the Little Guild, while also serving popcorn and lemonade. “We really appreciate the girls’ efforts and would like to respectfully make a request of the public,” said Faith Fails, assistant director of the Little Guild. “The cats really enjoy Fancy Feast and the dogs love Little Caesar. We have a couple of kitties with cancer — and we like to spoil them.”During a recent membership meeting, the Brownies decorated their donation boxes and collaborated on writing this article to announce their community service project. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
